10 Things You Can Rent For Extra Cash

It's amazing what you can rent out for some extra cash, especially if you live in the city or a busy area. Everyone loves earning some extra cash but it can be a lot of work to pick up a second job or start up a side project. If you're looking for an easy way to make some extra cash on the side which can be useful for savings, an emergency fund or even to help pay the bills then why not start renting out your belongings.

A spare room

If you are in the position to have a spare room which isn't in use why not make the most from it and let it out or even if you have a whole house which isn't in use then you may want to rent it out. Many people look for somewhere cheaper than hotels to stay so if you have decent prices and are in a good area you can make a steady income from this on a long-term basis. Airbnb and Spareroom.co.uk are great websites to start listing your accommodation or room to let.

Garage or attic space

If you have the extra space in your garage or attic there are people who are willing to pay you for this. Some people don't have the room at their own place, some live in small apartments or rent one bedroomed properties but may need somewhere safe to store their belongings until they find a bigger place. I know someone who makes an extra £100 a month by letting out their garage to someone they know who has downsized whilst saving up for a mortgage deposit as it's much cheaper than commercial storage. Check out Storemates if you have space to rent out.

Your car

Did you know that you can even rent out your car? This could be on a half day, daily, weekly or even a long-term basis. If you have a car which is just sitting on your driveway or in the garage how about making some easy cash? Have a fancy car that someone may want to hire for a wedding? Just make sure that your insurance is still covered for other people using it or they have insurance to drive any car. Car rentals are extremely popular for holiday makers who don't want to hire a car for the week at extortionate prices. Some places you can list your car include: Easy Car Club (UK), Car Next Door (AUZ) and Turo (US).

Parking space

If you have a spare parking space or you don't drive and yours isn't being used why not make a few quid out of it and let someone rent it. JustPark (UK) or Spot (US) is a great website where you can list your parking space where it's on your driveway, roadside, in a car park or underground theres bound to be someone who could benefit from it as parking in cities can be extremely expensive! If you live near an airport, gigs, stadium, train station, event space or offices then you could defintiely be making money from this all year round. I've actually used the website when I went on holiday and found somewhere near Manchester Airport for £18 for two weeks instead of paying £60-100 at the airport.

Bike

Have a bike sat in the garage not put to good use? Why not let someone rent it for the day, week or on a long-term basis. If you live in the city many people prefer to cycle to work and can't afford a bike or have no where to store one. This could be a nice little money earner on the side.

Lawnmower

Is your lawnmower gathering dust in the shed, or doesn't get a lot of action why not let it out to people to mow their own lawns. This could be to neighbours or strangers.

Your wedding dress

Why not rent out your wedding dress? Your big day is over and your dress is most likely in the attic or in your wardrobe so why not make some extra cash from it? Many people prefer to hire wedding dresses these days as they are far more affordable than going out and buying a new one.

Your home for style magazines/shoots

Fancy earning a little extra cash by letting out your home for the day? Magazines, Film and TV production teams are always on the look out for home they can shoot in.Your house doesn't need to be a mansion but typically they look for nice homes with lots of light or a nice open kitchen to shoot in. Rates of pay can be pretty good earning between £500-£2000 a day. Check out Lavish Locations, Amazing Space and Shoot Factory to list your home.

Caravan or tent

Have a caravan or tent which only gets used when you go on holiday? Make some extra cash by renting it out to holiday makers the rest of the year.

Yourself

Yep, I'm being serious, you can rent yourself out as a friend on websites such as Rent A Friend to attend a social event, wedding, parties, go to the movies or find a new hobby. I searched my postcode on it the other day and actually found a few people I know listed on there. I guess it could be a good way to make some new friends whilst making money especially if you're an extrovert!

A few other things that you could rent out include your photography equipment, tools, DVDs, xbox, money, wi-fi, items for events, pushchairs and other baby items if people are on holiday or even yourself!

You can rent out your belongings on sites such as Zilok, Rentnotbuy and Rentmyitems as well as on local Facebook groups, supermarket notice boards or even to friends it may be slow to begin with but there's nothing to loose so why not list your items and see what happens.

So there you go, you can rent out pretty much anything as long as it's legal. Just make sure that you have insurance on your belongings incase anything were to happen to them.

Have you rented out any of your belonging before? Was it a success? Let me know in the comments below.

  11. Great ideas here. I've never thought about renting out my wedding dress before - the only concern I would have is whether the person renting it would need to have it taken in or made shorter. When I bought mine, I had quite a few alterations. Interesting read!
